Yesterday, the day before Terry Schiavo's death, I had a moment of clarity--free from ranting talk show commentators, self-serving fanatics and hypocrites, the demands of pro-lifers and pro-choicers, judicial decisions, cynical politicians manipulating events for their own ends, bizarre legislative proposals, even free from the notion that there is such a thing as the "case" of Terri Schiavo. In that moment all I heard was Bob Schindler's plea to his son-in-law: "Michael, give me back my daughter." Amid the din, that was the only voice that came through. A father who loves his daughter and just can't let her go. I'm a father who loves my daughters, and that voice went straight to my heart.
